Different checksums on EEC-V reads

Post by brianko »

I'm trying to read a binary from an EEC-V ECU (99 Ranger). I've thoroughly cleaned the J3 connector, reseated the Moates adapter several times, and the reads aren't consistent. Often, I get a "verification failed" error when I try to compare the buffer contents to the ROM. I've done 15 different reads, and between them I get 5 or 6 different checksums.

Any ideas of what else I can do to ensure a good read? The problem is that I have a very limited def file to work with, so I can't tell if the binary is "good" or not other than to look for obvious code starts/stops with a hex editor. Pretty hit and miss, that.

Some eec-v's reputedly require +Vbatt when reading them and cannot be powered from the J3 alone (insufficient USB power maybe?). I have not personally experienced this but it might be worth considering.
