Yes is the quick and simple answer but as always it's not that easy. It'll will depend on whether someone has already written on definition file for your particular ecu or if you can develop one yourself if it doesn't exist.
A fair few, for example lets say Ford offer 6 car models in the UK and there's 4 engine choices on each, half of those could have manual or auto gearboxes, half of those could have air con. This lot would probably means 44 different ecus (being conservative) and then there's the every other year change they seem to do to the ecu. It soon adds up
