Engine load help

Can anyone tell me :
- how the engine load is measured
-what does it actually measures
-what unit of measurement it uses
-what maps use the engine load parameter
-is it calculated by gathering parameters from different sensors like MAP and MAF and passing them through an algorithm ?
I'm working on a 402 ecu 599soft , and as you can see , i'm a beginner , so please help me and excuse me if i wrote anything wrong
