No data when monitering ecu

I cant seem to receive any data after setup and click on D at top of page. I also see at the very top no xdf selected, but have not found any place to select an xdf file and I also have seen 'no xdf files exist'. Anybody know how to get data? The computer # 1228253 and it is for 1989 buick reatta.
