90 5.0 has taken a dump, need HELP!

Post by Craig Smith »

Guys, see if you can help me with this one.

Had a A9L ECM in my son's 1990 5.0 LX
Been tuning on it for a few months. Getting better and better.
My son had a passenger in the car and it seems that he semi-unplugged the Ostrich as the car was running.
Car would not crank back up.
Tried loading the tune back in the ECM, Ostrich read it fine, verified the tune, no problem.
Car won't crank. Figured the ECM was toast.
Got a A9P ECM.
Plugged the A(P in the car, strated right up, didn't run all that well but figured it's a virgin box.

Loaded the old tune in the A9L, should have worked.
Nope, Pump stayed on all the time, would run but it was awful.
Noticed that somhow my bins had lost their padding.
Figured out how to pad the files, loaded the Virgin A9P bin file back in the car using the Burn1.
Car cranks, agian, doesn't run that well due to the deletes we did on the EGR, Fans, and Air pump. Plus the car now has a 75mm TB.

The car will NOT crank after it gets hot.
Replaced, Rotor cap and buttom, plugs, module on side of dizzy.
Checked timing with a light.
Removed the Burn1 chip adapter.
Car still will not crank when hot.
Took it to a shop, they put it on a scanner, there is Spark, injectors pulsate, the scanner could not read the ECM. The scanner is one of those that hook up through the internet, not a handheld.
Have I fried another ECM?
The shop folks and I are stumped!

It's wierd, the car will crank and run when started cold!

Maybe I messed up with the padding of the files.
When you pad one, you open the bin stacker.
Set the chip size, which I picked 64k
Set the block size the same, 64k
Set the bin size to the sctual size of the unpadded bin, 56k
Mode is Stack
picked the input file and the out put files.
Stacked it, worked fine

I did notice that when I burn the chip, Chip Addressing section,it ask for the start address in the Hex. I have it set at 03000
End address is 03ffff
Buffer addressing is
Start 000000
End address 00ffff

Anything in the above I did wrong?

Is this a typo? The start address for the F2 and F3 adapters is 0x30000 for the eec-iv when using a 64k bin.

Looking at the Flash and Burn interface
Start is 030000
end is 03FFFF

Buffer
start is 000000
end is 00FFFF

We do not have the EGR, air pump, or canister in the car.

Awful lot of sensor/actuator related errors there, are your voltages OK?

Sorry it took so long to get back, I was on vacation last week.

Voltage checks out fine.
The son bought a recon ECM and we put it in yesterday.
The car runs like a champ!
We had to increase the idle a bit since we have the 75mm TB in it.
I really have no idea why the thing went screwy on us.
I always thought the the ECM either worked or it didn't.
To have one do what this one is doing has me stumped.

Does anyone know of a place to send the bad ones to get checked out?
I sent an e-mail to Craig Moates already asking him

I don't know if this applies to your set up but I just recently read something I didn't know about A9L / A9P loom issues;

http://www.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?t=540841

Also, the board can suffer failure between the VSS and BAP sensor traces shorting. This is meant to be obvious from looking at the first trace on the signal return line inside the case and can be fixed with a solder bridge. I'm not sure if this problem is related to that described in the link.

That link sounds just exactly what I am running into
Makes perfect sense with the A9P in it now and running fine.
We had the A9L in it, tuning on it.

Thanks Dex
